The Secretary Chant
In the poem The Secretary Chant the woman is feeling depressed. Everything that is explained in the poem relates to her because it has to do with things that makes her feel like she has everything going on at once. At a time she felt more like a woman when things went her way and she was happier. Everything in her life makes her feel like life isn't worth living anymore because she wants to be happy but at the same time is stressing about life. She feels that everything that is going on in life is being put on her and no one is helping her. My hips are a desk relates to her having burdens put on her and my ears hang chains of paper clips shows the meaning of how she feels. When it mentions her navel being a reject button, it is insinuating that she wants to not deal with anything in life that is going wrong. This is a girl that needs support in her life from someone that has went through the same things she has gone through. Talking with someone about how she feels and why she is stressed would help her. In her lifetime she was once happy but feels sadness from everything that is going on with her. She is a woman that needs to get out more often and let the sun shine down on her. At this time she feels depressed, lonely, and unhappy with everything. She needs to take time for herself and discover what she has going for her. Rubber bands form my hair that is mentioned in the poem shows that she feels as if everyone is nagging at her and constantly expect something from her. The word "once" in the poem is spelled with a W because it signifies the word woman. In my opinion the word Woman is used to express how one is. A real true woman respects herself, and doesn't take any crap. She's always on top of the world and in this poem the woman starts to feel bad about herself but needs to fix that. Something in life has made her feel this way about herself because of a situation. The weight of stress is on her shoulders and she needs to let it all go and realize that she can be woman again. Taking one day at a time will help her grow back into the woman she once was where she actually enjoyed life. This happens to people in life and they deal with things that make them stressed out but then can overcome what they are going through if they just take one day at a time. Her possiblity of becoming happy will not be hard to do because she can get through it all. In the poem it is mentioned how her head is a badly organized file because she has so much going on in her head that she doesn't know where to turn because of all the stress.
Facing another day might be hard for her at first but time is the key. One day at a time.

Amber,
It is very clear why you are studying psych, your approach to understanding this poem and the nurturing tone you bring to your writing points to a genuine need to listen and help others if you can. You also see understanding or word play that speaks to an underlying meaning that most would just see as a misspelled word. Thanks for you thoughts.
Amber,
Calling attention to specific lines really helps to target where these negative emotions come from. Don't forget to put quotation marks around the lines you quote directly, ie "My hips are a desk," and " my ears hang chains of paper clips." I appreciate that you're offering her a way to get out of this "paper clip wasteland" she's in, by focusing on "one day at a time."
I believe there are metaphors throughout this poem to let the reader know that the worker is a woman doing a job that makes her feel like a machine with only one purpose in life. It is important to visualize the mental image of a woman who has no personal identity but who is living her life indirectly through her career. You pulled a lot of quotes from the poem that showed a deeper meaning. I like how you see the symbolic relation between rubber bands and people constantly nagging her. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
I have to admit that I have a problem with one of the sentences you used.
"A real true woman respects herself, and doesn't take any crap" seems as though you feel that someone who may pick and choose her battles isn't a real woman, or that because a woman feels depressed that she does not respect herself and is then less of a woman. I feel that as long as you are strong and are able to get through the hard times and take care of what needs to be taking care of then you can be a real woman. i do not mean to be mean to you but it was just the one line. I liked the way you wrote every other one in your blog.
I feel you got a great understanding of the poem. You seem like you got a feeling for how the girl feels throughout the poem. I like how you give parts of the poem and tell the reader what you feel they meen. You really give the reader a great idea of what the poem is about.
